7 Things About Self-Defense
In childhood, we may have fantasized about becoming a hero like we watched in cartoon series or other superhero series, even inspired by the kung fu master films in the style of Chinese films that used to be very often screened. We're all grown up now, and things like that may be forgotten on their own more often. But in times like this, where we have become the most responsible person for anything related to us, it's good for us to return to our childhood dreams. This of course is related to self-defense.
But wait a minute, it's not about chasing that dream until you're 'black belted' in terms of martial arts (unless you want to), but rather a simple trick about self-defense that will be very influential in our life or death situations. when forced to deal with it. Of course, we all don't expect the times when we have to defend ourselves from attacks or threats of any kind to actually happen. But even if it does happen, at least we are better prepared to defend ourselves than not to give up any resistance at all, which will certainly put our safety at risk.
7 Things About Self-Defense
1.Survival: Realize the fact that we can die
About the first self-defense, this is the most important part. Realize that we may die from any attack or threat. We could be killed from the attack that happened to us, but even panicking will not lower the probability that we will be killed. First, we have to accept the fact that we could be killed from this 'fight'. We have to be able to accept and get used to this fact, and hopefully our fears can be quelled and we can concentrate on self-defense.
It's perfectly natural to have fear, it's very human, but fear or panic won't help at times like this. Of course we are afraid that something will happen to our safety and those around us. But this fear will disrupt our concentration during an attack and make us fail to save ourselves and those around us.
2. Fight When Attacked
Our instincts are created to protect ourselves. Some things that may become more threatening is when we run from attacks. Granted, actually running away from an attack is a very helpful act, but only when the distance between us and the attacker is far enough that making an act of escape really helps. But when we don't have time to run away because we are cornered or the distance is very close, then we have to fight back.
Instead of going backwards, just go forward. Do not create our position as prey and the attacker as a predator. We can use whatever is around us as a weapon to defend ourselves. When we position ourselves as prey and the attacker as predator and we can only flee in panic, the attacker will not expect us to fight back and will continue to chase. Instead, put up a fight and the attacker will be surprised. Use nearby objects as weapons. Remember, here we are risking the safety of ourselves and those around us.
3. Everything Can Be a Weapon
As mentioned above, all objects around us can be used as weapons. Anything harder than our fists and sharper than our fingers can be used as weapons. It would be wise if we always prepare objects that can be used as weapons such as pens, small forks, keys and other non-violent objects (which do not violate the law when carried) wherever we go. Rocks on the ground can also be used as weapons, especially if the attacker is at a considerable distance.
It's important to keep in mind that hard objects should be hit where there is more bone, and sharp or pointed objects should be struck against softer or meat-dominated areas.
4. Kick Only When Necessary and Possible
Bruce Lee, at a conference, once suggested kicking only when necessary and possible, especially when at a good distance. Make sure that the attacker is at a good distance before taking the kick. In addition to the legs, also swing your waist when kicking, this will make your kicks harder and more powerful. According to Bruce Lee too, do kicks towards the body part closest to reach.
As the attacker approaches, there is a greater chance that we will be threatened, but the probability of taking a kick to the nearest body part also increases. Also make sure you can reach sensitive body parts such as the solar plexus and pubic or groin. Do your best, but if you feel that kicks don't help, don't kick them because if they dodge, they will hurt you more easily.
5. Body Position and Movement
Adjust the position of the body so that it is always ready when it comes to defending and attacking. Hands are always up, parallel to the chest, and standing feet have a distance, so that you are ready to hit and kick, as well as to dodge attacks. In terms of movement, we must be mobile as much as possible, in the sense of moving around to give us time to find opportunities to attack and dodge. Also, we should be able to read the attacker's movements.
6. Attack All the Weakest Parts
As already mentioned in point #4, hit all the weakest parts of the attacker. The solar plexus and pubic area are probably two of the weakest parts we can attack to immobilize the attacker. In addition, you can attack these parts: eyes, nose, ears, neck/throat, kneecap, to the ribs which will also be very effective at immobilizing the attacker.
7. When Legs and Hands Can't Be Used, The Head Is The Last Choice
Use the head, literally, use the head when hands and feet cannot be used. There may be times where we are already locked in by attackers. The final option is to use the head. Did you know that a strike with the forehead is twice as strong as a hand? Human bones are very strong, and the bones in the forehead and head are no exception. By hitting the assailant's forehead in the face, at least he would break his nose. The head is also very easy to move, especially when locked when facing a meeting or from behind. Attack the nose, temples or ears.
In this case of self-defense, even if we have to face it, we must not be 'passive players'. We must of course be able to fight back when there is no other way out. We cannot allow ourselves to fall prey to the assailant. Instead, make ourselves as dangerous as the attacker. Master all the things about self-defense that we can learn. Let's hope that the times when we have to defend our safety from attacks or threats will not come.
