Know the Difference Between Martial Arts Self Defense and Martial Arts Combat Sport

Currently, various types of martial arts or martial arts are developing in various parts of the world. In practice, this type of self-defense is divided into two types, namely self-defense martial arts and combat sports martial arts.

Then, what is the difference between these two martial arts? Skor.id tried to break it down with mixed martial arts or MMA expert, Jeremy Meciaz.

The following is an excerpt from the interview with Jeremy Meciaz who is also a fighter in ONE Championship:

Actually, what is the difference between martial arts self defense and martial arts combat sport?

Martial arts self-defense is a type of self-defense that is lite and focuses more on defending oneself from practical crimes.

Usually, this kind of self-defense is mostly traditional, such as karate, wing cun, kung fu, taekwondo, pencak silat, aikido, krav maga, to eskrima.

This type of self-defense is also contested. However, they are non-combatants or mostly lite points with complete protective equipment.

Meanwhile, martial arts combat sports are combat sports that are full body contact and hard martial arts.

So far, the martial arts that can be categorized as combat sports are Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sanda & Boxing, and wrestling.

This type of self-defense is more of an aggressor or attacker. In layman's language, it might be categorized as self-defense (to) fight.

Can self-defense martial athletes compete in combat sports?

Can. Many of them have started to open their horizons to learn hybrid techniques even though sometimes they are still not perfect and are carried away by their techniques.

In our gym, Predator MMA Indonesia, recommends that traditional martial artists who want to deepen their knowledge of combat sports can learn and join the existing combat sport martial arts fight camps.

The goal is that maturity (technique) is more perfect when directed by experienced MMA coaches and athletes.

What are the characteristics and advantages of MMA compared to other martial arts?

MMA is a mixed martial arts concept that is categorized into four types of combat.

First, stand up fighting. Second, ground fighting. Third, clinch fighting. Fourth, submission. Completeness of techniques is a characteristic and advantage of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Can every martial art become MMA?

No. MMA standards are regulation, due diligence, efficiency, and effectiveness of martial arts that can be hybridized into one concept in MMA and its transitions.

Based on the research results, only the combat sport martial arts category is effectively combined into a series in MMA combat.

What is a transition in MMA fighting?

Because 90 percent of every type of fight starts from a standing position (stand up fighting) and ends under the floor (ground fighting), transitions are important to learn.

How to bring someone (opponent) down (floor) and end it. So, clinch fighting is used and ends by beating the opponent or paralyzing or submission.

Can self defense and traditional martial arts compete in MMA?

It is possible as long as they are open to learning combat sport martial arts techniques and are not fanatical about one type of self-defense.
